What’s Square Dance all about?
Square Dance is an American folk dance. Four couples facing each other in a square follow the choreography of a Caller. Dancers have to be ready to execute any one of a number of possible next moves. Good Callers always try to surprise the dancers with new and unexpected combinations. The music is usually contemporary country music and the calls are given in English language, meaning that square dancers can join in dances anywhere in the world.
Requirements
No dance experience is required just your good humour and your wish to share the fun.
Beginner’s class: Square Dance
The beginner’s class is divided into two parts. The first part lasts from mid of September until December covering about 30 of the most elementary figures. The second part, from January till June covers the rest of the Mainstream-program. By then the 65 figures as defined by the international Callerlab »Mainstream«-program will have been covered over 40 one-hour evening lessons.
The beginner’s class finishes with a graduation (not to be taken too seriously) and the presentation of the Vienna Swingers badge. You can then join in any mainstream square dance anywhere in the world.
The dance classes are held every Monday from 7 p.m. to about 8 p.m. in the club house on the first floor of of the Österreichischen Touristenklub, Bäckerstraße 16, in Vienna’s First District.
Plus-level dancing (an additional 30 figures) is also offered at our club. On demand a Plus-class for Mainstream dancers will be offered. The Advanced-levels A1 and A2 are danced every other Tuesday in our club, all levels above that are not danced in our club.
Anything left ?
Two “open days” are held in September each year where you can try your hand at square dance. But there is no need to wait for on open day or an official dance class evening. You are welcome to pass by at any of our dance evenings, Monday 6 p.m., at the Bäckerstraße club rooms.
